February is stewardship month @ MBC. Together we learn and stretch ourselves in the whole area of life stewardship. This month we study together the NT book of Philemon. There is a powerful stewardship thread running throughout this book. Paul teaches us how to give our lives away to Christ.

Our studies this spring will take us through the book of I Peter in a series entitled:

“The Hope Factor”

Hope is an elusive commodity it seems in these days of political and spiritual upheaval. Peter addresses a group of people on the run and in desperate need of hope. Here is the road map of our journey:

Many people are afraid to talk about getting close to God. There ought to be a passionate desire to experience closeness to God in all of us who know Christ. Without knowing Christ, closeness to God can never happen. But when one is truly “born from above” the longing to get close to God ought to be a part of our experience. Ps. 15 is the focus of our study during these weeks together. David writes the RX for getting close to God. Ps. 15 is one of those “entrance” psalms written to share with young people on how to prepare for a worship service at the tabernacle and later the temple as they came to the entrance gate. But it is meant to go way beyond a catechism lesson. It really reveals God’s requirements for those who would aspire to be his close friend. Join us for this “God Up Close” series and prepare to be changed by God’s spirit!

II Peter is Peter’s siren song before he departs for glory. In this letter Peter repeatedly uses the words “remember,” “be reminded,” “don’t forget.” How easy it is to be forgetful. If we forget to make our deposit, it could have dire financial consequences for us. If we forget a birthday or anniversary of a loved one, it could be hurtful to the one we love. In the OT book of Deuteronomy God solemnly warned the new generation of Israel not to forget His commands or Himself as they entered into the wonderful land God was about to give them. Their future well-being hinged on remembering. The church is reminded not to forget the Lord’s death by gathering around the Lord’s Supper consistently. Peter seems to fear that his audience would forget the basics of the Christian faith. He gives encouragement, warnings, and examples to help all of us remember the basics. Our time together on Sunday morning will consist of listening to Peter’s reminders to the church. Food, air, water, shelter are all basics that we must continually give attention to. Peter brings us back to the basics of our Christian life. Without attention to the basics, life will fall apart. Join us for a journey through Peter’s nine basics to the Christian faith.
